The original Cottage restaurant opened in 1981 on Columbus and 76th Street in the Upper West Side of the city. A year later, they relocated one block, to Amsterdam and 77th Street. The name was given because of the hominess of the interior of the restaurant.
The wood paneled walls and soothing lighting give The Cottage a certain warmth that the neighborhood has enjoyed for over 25 years.
The owner says that a testament to his restaurant is the number of return guests-often patrons who once lived in the area and now travel distances to visit the restaurant. Along with the deliciously authentic Szechuan cuisine, diners enjoy free wine with dinner.
Szechuan Dumplings with hot oil
Seafood Dumplings Szechuan
Spicy Basil Chicken-- Sliced chicken sautéed with bell pepper onions, fresh basil and Szechuan chili pepper
Chicken with Orange Flavor-- Chicken chunks in orange sauce
Sesame Chicken-- Chunks of chicken with brown hot sauce and broccoli on the side and sesame seeds on top
Crispy Prawns with Walnuts-- Slicked jumbo shrimp with walnuts in a slightly sweet and sour sauce
Mango Shrimp-- Jumbo shrimp sautéed with fresh mango, black mushroom, carrots and bell peppers in a brown sauce
My favorite Chinese restaurant north of Chinatown. My favorite part about this place is how little oil they use when I order lo-mein or moo shu. It never tastes greasy.

The delivery time was great, it always is. But something has changed in the quality of the food, the dumplings are still great. In the last month the food has gotten terrible.
Ordered a beef dish. Looked and tasted like shoe leather.
Ate a little bit and saved the rest, that night I didn't feel well but put it down to something else. The next day I heated up the leftovers, tasted it again, it was vile. I spent that entire night being sick,
not going to order again.

got a foodtracker text 5 minutes after ordering saying it was on its way. one hour later, still not here. DOUBLE lame.

Egg roll was poor and soggy
Sesame chicken was also soggy and overly spiced drowning in sesame liquid

Instead of chicken with cashews, I got prawns with snow peas, the rest of the order was correct. I love this restaurant and decided not to call the error in. Everything was amazing!!!!!!! I'm addicted to the hot sezchuan noodles!!!! The best chinese food in the city!

I'm am OBSESSED with this restaurant. Obsessed. Everything is so good and the delivery is quick. Their fried rice and dumplings are amazing, and I love the garlic bok choy. If you ever go to the restaurant, they give you free Franzia with each entree which is awesome.

Consistently perfect! We order Cottage delivery every Saturday. Hot and speedy, delicious!

We've had a number of take outs from here that appear to have caused a stomach upset. it's nearly impossible to prove it was the food and not something else so I always try to give the benefit of the doubt (even when all evidence points in that direction). HOWEVER, I recently got a take out that should have been vegetarian (Tofu based) and yet had a large piece of meat in it. I don't know whether it was pork or chicken (I have been vegetarian for years) but I will never, EVER, buy from here again...

Boiled dumpling was amazing

Mu shu chicken isn't bad, otherwise pretty flavorless
Posted 8 months ago by Stacy E.
The sweet & sour pork was excellent! The chicken with baby shrimp was also very good. The order came very promptly, in fact, it was surprisingly fast. However, we did not get napkins, forks, or fortune cookies. After all, this is a Chinese restaurant!

This place was better the last time I ordered...Wasn't quite as fresh, noodle were a bit soggy. And, they forgot my Coke, which I paid for in the order. It did arrive like 10 minutes after I entered the order which was impressive.

Sesame chicken had long pieces which were overcooked and tough to chew. It was not not the usual lightly fried chunks.

Consistently good. Delivery time is fast, food is hot and delicious.

The delivery was very fast and the delivery man was nice. The food, though, was pretty terrible. The beef fried rice was fine, not amazing but not bad. The scallion pancake came with a really strange peanut sauce that did not taste good with it at all--not even close to the kind of sauce that usually comes with a scallion pancake. The pancake itself was fine. The sesame chicken was okay but not delicious. The prawns with lobster sauce were not fresh--they tasted like they'd been frozen at best, or maybe had gone bad at worst; they were rubbery and didn't taste right. Really had to force them down. The sauce wasn't great either, but would've been fine if the prawns tasted fresh. The mixed chinese vegetables were ok but not something I would ever elect to eat if I could see/taste it before ordering. And the hot & sour soup was worst of all--spicy yet simultaneously completely bland! All 'hot' and no 'sour'. Uneatable. We took two bites and with heavy hearts threw it away. In fact, would have thrown all the food away if we weren't rather hungry and hadn't just paid $50 for the food. Maybe their other dishes are better and we just happened to pick the exact wrong things? I don't know. I do know that I normally relish getting to order in but this time made me dread ever doing it again. Bad bad experience. :(

My favorite Chinese in the neighborhood (W 80s). Really fast delivery and consistently good food. I frequently request modifications to standard dishes (changing the sauce, asking for less sauce) and they always get it right.
Posted 11 months ago by Jamie G.
Good soup and egg rolls. Shamefully bad fried rice. Seriously. The rice was inedible.

Not bad. Not spicy. Good value and well made. Just bland.

About the worst chinese food or food that I have had..Uneatable..and I have been living on the upper west side for over a decade and there are so many great restaurants here. I found Cottage on google maps and was living close to it so thought i would try it. Moreover when i called to complain about the food, the restaurant asked me to call seamless and seamless customer service does not pick up the phone. I am writing this review to let others know and will post this on yelp and other sites as well so that people stay away from seamless and order directly from restaraunts and not through this faceless intermediary.

Super fast delivery. Dishes are hit or miss so don't give up if you get one that's bland. Their fried dumplings are great! Currently the only Chinese restaurant with an A rating on the UWS (other than $$$ shun lee).
Posted a year ago by Amanda S.
Chicken was bad; Lo Mein was only OK. They forgot to include utensils, side sauces, etc.
Posted a year ago by Yoni M.
just ok. not overly salty common to chinese food which is good though would have been better to have more seasoning
Posted a year ago by Alexis R.
We order from here often and are pleased with the food. However, the seafood dumplings are awful! You might as well put a few tablespoons of Jiffy peanut butter and mixed it in. I was expecting something a little spicier, not so much peanut. Maybe I missed something on the description. Would not recommend the seafood dumplings....just awful. One star is being beyond generous UNLESS you are a peanut butter lover (which I am..just not this combo)

Really like their make your own dish option. One of the better Chinese food options on the UWS.

Hands down, the WORST Chinese food I've ever eaten! Extremely greasy, completely bland and lacking any sort of flavor(except the flavor of grease), found bits of other dishes mixed into my food. Totally disgusting! I give them one star for fast delivery, unfortunately the food was inedible, so I threw it out just as fast as it arrived!

I love this place - but it KILLS me that they raised their minimum price to 20 bucks! Why?? They must not need the tons of business from the single people on the upper west side. I have to look elsewhere now, I guess. GRRRR.

I have ordered from Cottage twice and times has been fantastic. I've tried other Chinese food places with great disappointment but the cottage has my faith back in good Chinese food in NYC. Tried both the Chicken and snow peas and their specialty, chicken with three nuts. Both were hot, fresh and tasty!

Been order from these guys for years. Great food, never greasy or with floury-msg type sauces, always fresh and scalding hot, and delivered in a seemingly impossible timeframe
Posted a year ago by RUSSELL C.
I thought this was very good. I have still been trying places on the UWS and so far this is my favorite. I had the Shrimp & Pork, Hunan-Style and a Hot and Sour soup and both were great.

I really like this place, but I was set with some higher expectations after dining in, then ordering delivery. The food arrived really fast, but it must not hold well if its not delivered right to the table, as I had the same dish dining at the restaurant and the chicken was much crispier and hot there. It had that reheated feel and was luke warm when I got it delivered. The egg roll I ordered was the opposite, being over cooked, and still piping hot. Hopefully a fluke, because this was one of the best Chinese places I've visited on the UWS

I have no idea who's giving this place high marks. The food is very bland, tasteless and greasy. If you like your chinese food incredibly mild then this is the place for you otherwise not worth the money or the wait time. Banned!

Ordered from these guys once and my pad thai was filled with egg shells, I decided I wouldn't order from them again. Then a friend convinced me today to give them one more try, and he ended up with a *small strip of metal* in his meal. Unless you like random literal TRASH in your food, I'd steer clear of this place for sure.

When I was going to China everyone told me that I would hate the food there. Well I didn't. It was fresher and lighter than I ever had in New York. I had difficulty finding a place I liked when I got back. I have never been disappointed with The Cottage. It is light and delicious. I am always happy, especially with the Szechwan Dumplings. YUM!
Posted 2 years ago by Susannah B.
What can I say but very impressed. I've never felt compelled to review a seamless restaurant before but the first meal I got from The Cottage far exceeded my expectations. All the food arrived in time and hot enough that it felt like it had just left the kitchen. The orange chicken was excellent - best I've had and that's saying a lot for the sampling of Chinese places I've used over the years. Well worth an order.
Posted 2 years ago by Tony W.
Very good food. There is not many too choose from on the upper west side. Just wish they would offer spare ribs!!!
Posted 2 years ago by laura k.
Worst vegetable spring roll I have ever had. Also, did not include any utensils! Will not be ordering again.
Posted 2 years ago by Bailey W.
Mediocre. The entrees are just swimming in oil -- that's the "sauce!"
Posted 2 years ago by Matthew P.
I have become somewhat addicted to this restaurant! It's consistently fresh, tasty, and for such a great price you can order in or eat out without breaking your bank. Love everything on the menu, but always get the beef fried dumplings and cold noodles. Just ordered another great meal, and can't wait to get it delivered :D

One of the best chinese restaurants on the UWS. Always good food and good service with me. Eating in the restaurant is great too.
Posted 2 years ago by Anton G.
The food is great but the delivery people are about the rudest I have ever met. I would NEVER order food from them again as I do not appreciate having them ring my buzzer twice after 20 seconds and then throwing the food in my face.
Posted 2 years ago by Theresa M.
Better for eating in than ordering delivery. But good food -- all the time, for years.
Posted 2 years ago by GEETA C.
chicken and broccoli was ok although a little oily, and the szechwan dumplings were soggy, mushy, and inedible
Posted 2 years ago by Tina M.
Food is great and consistent. Love the fried rice and chow fun.
Posted 2 years ago by Daphna J.
Absolutely horrific. The hot noodles were mushy, watery and tasteless. The chicken with peanuts was way overcooked - chewy and tough. Really awful.
Posted 2 years ago by John S.
very good dumplings. anything that goes with sesame sauce is good here. Like the good old days. tried the crispy shredded beef. not like the good old days, but the closest I've found so far. the beef somewhat crispy. the thinly sliced julienne veggies too crisp and was very oily the next day. since i've been so disappointed in local Chinese fare, this is the place I'm willing to give a chance. Hope you do too.
Posted 2 years ago by Melissa T.
This has been my go-to chinese food for the past 18 years. The delivery time takes much shorter than seamlessweb says. As a health conscious vegan who wants to pig out on greasy chinese food sometimes this place is perfect, but it also has options for less calorie dishes, though if your on a diet i wouldn't recommend it. I love all the bean curd (tofu) dishes, as well as the pad thai and the sesame noodles.
Posted 3 years ago by Elizabeth A.
Mediocre and bland. Chow fun had no flavor; egg roll overcooked and oily; sichuan dumplings in hot oil were muddy and flat. Waste of money.
Posted 3 years ago by Maura H.

really cheap for the area. the seafood dumplings are a must and the chow fun is pretty good
Posted 3 years ago by Adam L.
Fast delivery but they never include chopsticks and the food is too oily.
Posted 3 years ago by Jamie P.
Food was not tasty. Secondly, I specifically wrote i was allergic to nuts just as a precaution and the seafood dumplings (which had no description) were smothered in peanut sauce which i didn't realize until mid-chew. I called to tell them that a- they sent the wrong order and b- I'm allergic to nuts and the person on the other end said i should have called. Perhaps, but i reminded her that i indicated this in the instruction section to which she literally laughed and said that they don't have time to read through them.

Great Value. Dumplings in hot oil are amazing.
Posted 3 years ago by Alain R.
So disappointing! Everything I ordered was bland and greasy. There was actually oil streaming out of the wax paper pouch containing the egg rolls. The pork fried rice had no flavor with large spots of unseasoned white rice and only dry shriveled strips of pork. Unfortunately the rest of the meal was equally bad.
Posted 3 years ago by Elizabeth G.
Cottage is a great Chinese place to order in from. Our favorites are the fried dumplings, which are delicious! Delivery times are variable but generally pretty fast. The menu has a good selection of items (including pad thai!), and the prices are pretty reasonable. We order from here a lot!
Posted 3 years ago by Ashley F.
the flavor of the shrimp and scallops was delicious!
Posted 3 years ago by Beth R.
Just ok Chinese food, but we like the fried rice a lot.
Posted 3 years ago by Cindy C.
We order The Cottage a couple times a month. The delivery comes VERY fast. The food is good - there aren't too many good chinese places on the surrounding blocks. I always get the "Create Your Own" dish and the scallion pancakes. The scallion pancakes are very crisp and come with a yummy dipping sauce. The only problem is that occasionally I've ordered the appetizers last, and when the appetizers are at the bottom of the order, they don't send them for some reason. Those times, I've called and they have sent me the appetizers, but then I have to tip again, deal with the person on the phone, etc. Now I just make a point to choose the soups and appetizers first, then the main courses.
Posted 3 years ago by Lacey F.
Not only do you receive free wine if you eat at the restaurant, the quality of the delivered food is excellent. The szechuan dumplings are great (very spicy), the orange beef or chicken are good choices, and if I'm looking for something healthier, I can get some pretty tasty steamed dishes.

I wind up ordering from The Cottage almost every Sunday night because it's my idea of the ultimate comfort food, just what I need to face the dramas of the upcoming week. I always start my order with their hot & sour soup--honestly, I do make an effort to sample another soup, but I never seem to get around to it, it's just so consistently soothing. Spicy but not too spicy--perfect.

Very good Chinese food at very reasonable prices. Fast delivery - I don't know how they cook so quickly! Wonton soup in particular is great.
Posted 3 years ago by Eric F.
DELICIOUS! The wonton soup was really well made and tasted great. Just what I needed to soothe my sore throat.
I order from here all the time. Its great food with great delivery. I always know it will be here on time!

The Cottage is my favorite Chinese on the UWS! No one makes Pad Thai or spicy foods like they do, and their delivery guys are super fast and friendly. Also, the white rice - cooked to perfection! Just a wonderful experience all the way around. My go-to comfort food.

always fast, speedy service, even in bad weather! i'm never disappointed when I order. Gourmet it's not, but at a $10 order minimum, this is great.

Make sure you explicitly say to include soy sauce in your delivery order. And make sure you put it "at the top" and not just at the end of your order. I wrote in the note section to add soy sauce because I saw that previous reviews mentioned it. When my food came, of course there was no soy sauce. So I called them back since I just moved into this apartment and don't have any soy sauce and it's 30 degrees outside. The woman literally screamed at me on the phone saying that I didn't put the note in the right place. Bottom line -- EXPLICITLY SAY THAT YOU WANT SOY SAUCE WHEREVER YOU CAN.
Posted 4 years ago by Rob C.
Good food at a great price. I recommend asking for the dishes steamed with the sauce on the side for a healthy alternative.
Posted 4 years ago by Jeremy F.
Watch out for this place - the food is ok for the price but they often fail to include things - an ingredient in a "design your own dish" selection, condiments, rice (or they send white when brown is requested). If they are trying to save money they have the wrong idea - as they are losing customers with these unnecessary annoyances. It seems to be too frequent (as noted in other comments) to be an occasional oversight - seems like a cost-saving practice for them, but customers should get what they order, and pay for!

I honestly have never gotten sick from a restaurant before, but this awful restaurant put me in the hospital. I was throwing up for 5 hours, and obviously got food poisoning. I have never written a review for anything before but I think people should know how terrible this establishment is and highly recommend to never go here. The food tasted weird but I didn't think much about it until my face was in the toilet for a couple of hours. Thanks for ruining my New Years Eve. The Cottage, your the worst. Sincerely, Disgruntled Customer

Fast Delivery, Food was Hot, and the order was right. The food was absolutely inedible. Chicken /Garlic sauce was flavorless and swimming in a poool of liquid grease. Wonton soup was hot water scallions and overcooked mushy wontons.

Mediocre at best. The vegetables were overcooked, the chicken was dry, and the flavors overall lacked punch. Far inferior to Ollie's.

I don't exactly have high standards for Chinese food, but this was not the best comparatively speaking. The roasted pork buns, in particular, were lacking. They were probably the toughest I've had and if the shape weren't there to fool me, I would have thought I was eating pork wrapped in Wonder Bread.
